Favorite Music Songs 2023

I no longer do much writing these days but because I still try to listen to as much music as possible, I thought it would be fun to make a list of my favorite songs from the year 2023. The first list is all rap music from the US of A, which is my favorite kind of new music to listen to personally, and in my opinion, that’s where the most exciting stuff is happening today. I think it is really amazing that so many different cities or regions throughout the USA have their own distinct sounds, and it is very thrilling to try to keep up with as many as possible. So for the Rap list, I tried to include the hometown or homebase of each artist.

I also listened to a lot of international music this year, because there is obviously a lot of innovation and amazing music being created all over the world, not just in my own home country. I have to especially shout out the great billdifferen, who introduced many fellow gringos throughout the world to Brazil’s unreal baile funk scene with his NTS mix (also required reading is his 2021 baile funk overview/history on Finals dot blog). I also listened to a lot of Jamaican dancehall, which some refer to as Jamaican drill these days, due to the more modern artists on the Island being influenced by American rap or Chicago’s drill music. I also tried to keep up with all the different music being made in the different regions of Africa, so there is some in there, although not as much as I would like. I tried to make the second list shorter than the first one, and really just included any genre in that list, including some good old rock and roll and R&B and pop and electronic music of various kinds.

Both lists were extremely hard to rank, so don’t take too much stock in the numbers themselves, because I love every song. I mostly added as I thought of things or came across them on old monthly playlists. I’m sure I’m forgetting some things, but hopefully you will find something new that you enjoy.
